Pumpkin Ale

Pumpkin ale - homebrew beer recipe

A refreshing pumpkin ale based on an English pale ale beer recipe for your fall festivities. You can use fresh pumpkin or if you must, canned, just get it without anything added like spices or sugar.

One thing you should be aware of is not thinking that you want to add more spices. The beer will turn out very astringent (at best) if you add more than the suggested amount of spices.

To caramelize the pumpkin, just put it in a large sheet pan in the oven at 450° F (235°C) until light brown on top. You can also do this on top of the stove if you do smaller batches. The roasting of the pumpkin will bring out the nutiness in the beer.

Food Pairing

Great for desert, even with your pumpkin pie. You could also drink this with a fruit course, especially grapes and maybe some soft cheese.

Notes

Please note that the ABV and OG/FG are estimates and should be higher than stated. It is impossible to know ahead of time how much sugar your pumpkin will have. The numbers given are for the base beer recipe without any pumpkin added.

This beer should age well since the alcohol is moderately high.
